What is the Trade Fair in The Gambia like?
It takes place from around the 26th of April until the 25th of May. Each dates differ. There is lots of food and drink, vendors, various stalls and people to meet. From jewellery and clothing to household products and electrical products, even African herbs.
This a yearly event in The Gambia, but there are also other trade fairs in other areas of the Kombo region in The Gambia. To gain access there is a payment required payable in cash or via Wave app, usually d0.50 but it may vary from year to year.
What can you expect?
At night there is often an artist from The Gambia that performs, so if you’re not into loud music you may prefer to come during the daytime. The crowds are also lesser during the day than at night. There is often a pleasant atmosphere and don’t be surprised if you get called (persuaded) to look at everyone’s offerings.
Is it safe?
In previous years there were lots of issues with local pickpockets and phone thieves, which is a general issue across various areas of Serakunda market, Kairaba avenue, Brusubi Turntable and at crowded bus stops etc. Fortunately there are more police on patrol at this year’s trade fair, but that does not mean you should not have your wits about you or throw caution to the wind. Just beware of the crowds at night outside of the the Trade fair waiting for the unsuspecting.
Who is it for?
It’s for anyone; adults, teenagers and children accompanied by an adult. Anyone can gain access whether Gambian or non-Gambian. Security is present at the door so if you’re not well behaved you can expect to be barred.
Is there parking?
Yes, there is plenty of parking outside, and limited parking on site, but check with officials first to see if you are able to gain access for your vehicle, as parking availability may often be already full.
